Saik’uz and Settlers: A Weave of Local History was the culmination of the Good Neighbours Committee’s Spirit of Vanderhoof Diversity Project, which from 2010-2011 delivered myriad diversity-celebrating projects.
The goal of the project was to foster a welcoming and inclusive community through building relationships amongst culturally diverse groups. The project was developed out of the Good Neighbours Committee’s mission: to have a society where racist behaviour is unacceptable and mutual respect between individuals is honoured.
Saik’uz and Settlers is a play designed to represent various cultures that made up Vanderhoof in 2011 and the impact they had on building the community. Woven throughout the play are stories of Saik’uz Whut’en, which reflect the importance of the First Peoples on this land, and some of the impact that European settlement has had on their families and communities.
